IMDO and MDA Successfully Complete a Flight Test of the Arrow Weapon System20-NEWS-0001
August 12, 2020
The Israel Missile Defense Organization (IMDO) of the Directorate of Defense Research and Development (DDR&D) of Israel's Ministry of Defense (IMOD), together with the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA), successfully completed a flight test of the Arrow-2 interceptor on August 12, 2020. Arrow Weapon System Test-18a (AST-18a) demonstrated system processes through live intercept of a Medium Range Ballistic Missile (MRBM) target. This test was conducted at a test range in central Israel and over the Mediterranean Sea.
A target was launched and tracked by the system’s fire control radars. The radars transferred flight information to the Battle Management Center (BMC) system for engagement planning and conduct. The Arrow-2 interceptor successfully performed its planned trajectory and destroyed the target. The Israeli Air Force took part in the test as part of operational evaluation and readiness training.
"The success of AST-18a provides even greater confidence in Israel’s capability to protect itself from regional threats,” said MDA Director Vice Admiral Jon Hill. “I congratulate this stellar team, which included the Israel Missile Defense Organization, the Israeli Air Force, and industry partners. MDA remains committed to assisting the government of Israel as it upgrades its national missile defense capability against current and emerging threats."
Moshe Patel, IMDO director, said, “The Arrow Weapon System is the Israeli upper tier strategic defense layer. The success of the Arrow-2 flight test today and the 2019 Arrow-3 campaign in Alaska demonstrate Israel defense capability against existing and emerging long range ballistic threats. I would like to thank the U.S. Government and the U.S. Congress for more than 30 years support of Israel Missile Defense programs and especially the MDA for joint management of these programs.”
The Arrow Weapon System is a major part of Israel's multi-layered defense array. This array is based on four layers; Iron Dome Defense System, David's Sling Weapon System, and the Arrow Weapon System, which includes Arrow-2 and Arrow-3 interceptors. The success of this test demonstrates the operational readiness of the State of Israel and its ability to defend itself against current and future threats in the region.
